How to Display SOLIDWORKS Envelope Components in Drawings

Envelope components are excellent for visual aid and reference when modeling an assembly in SOLIDWORKS. Envelope components are removed from the bill of materials and any mass property calculations but can be utilized to understand spacing and clearance within an assembly.

Envelope Use Case Example

Problem

Since the envelope components are considered references, they are not included in drawing views by default. However, there are times when it is desirable to include these envelope components in drawings.

Solution

Even though they are reference components, you may want to show the envelope component in the drawing. To do so, enter the view properties by right clicking anywhere in the view and selecting "Properties":

Then select the radio button for "Show Envelope":

Once completed, you will have a reference view of the envelope components:

You can adjust the color options at the system level if you want solid lines.
