SOLIDWORKS Quick Tip: Using the Intersect Tool to Measure Internal Volume

Problem

The Intersect tool can be used to modify existing geometry or create new geometry based on surfaces, solids, and planes that intersect each other. This article goes over how to use the Intersect Tool to measure the internal volume of a Solid with the "Create internal regions" option.

Solution

We can measure the internal volume using the steps below. In this example, a water bottle-shaped model is used.

  1. Open SOLIDWORKS and open a Part file with an internal volume
  2. Create planes that intersect with the solid body

  1. Activate the Intersect tool from Insert > Features > Intersect or from the Features tab

  2. Select the solid body and the plane to measure from, change the option to "Create internal regions", and click "Intersect"

Select the Solid Body, select internal regions, and click intersect
  3. Check bodies to exclude and uncheck "Merge result", so a separate body is created

    Uncheck merge result
  4. Open the Mass Properties from Tools > Evaluate > Mass Properties and select the body to measure the volume
