How to replace a Print Head on a Markforged Desktop and Industrial Printer

This article will walk through the process of replacing a Print Head on the Markforged printers. This process applies to the following printers; Onyx One, Onyx Pro, and the Mark Two, as well as the X3, X5, and X7.

 

Remove the Print Head

  1. Completely unload any print material from your printer.
  2. Power off your printer.
  3. Slide the black FFC Clip away from the metal bracket and onto the cable.Markforged FCC clip

  4. Next, push the top and bottom buttons of the ribbon cable connector. Markforged ribbon cable removal
  5. Slowly and carefully remove the connector from the print head. 
  6. While supporting the print head with your hand, use a 2.5mm hex key to remove the two screws connecting the print head to the print head base.

    Note: The photos above show an Industrial print head. The Desktop printers have a different print head, but the removal process is the same.
  7. Carefully pull the print head off of the print head base. 

 

Installing the new Print Head

Desktop Printer

  1. Install the new print head in the inverse order of the instructions above.
  2. Power on your printer.
  3. Reload the Plastic and Fiber Material (if you have a fiber capable printer)
  4. Plug the provided USB drive (provided with the print head, but not with the Onyx One) into your printer.
  5. Select the menu or USB icon from the dashboard. If you select the USB icon, skip to step 7.
  6. Select the Storage tile from the menu options.

     
  7. Select the Print From Storage tile from the menu options.

  8. Select the file from the USB drive and press Print to update the offsets for the print head. 
    Note: Not install the print head offsets will likely result in print quality issues.  
  9. Run the Z Offset utility (Menu > Bed Level > Adjust Print Bed Z Offset) and follow the onscreen instructions.
  10. Run the Shim Bed Level utility (Menu > Bed Level > Shim Bed Level) and follow the onscreen instructions. Continue on to calibrate the fiber nozzle height.

Industrial Printer

  1. Power on your printer.
  2. Reload print material into your printer.
    Note: To run the Adjust Laser Offsets , the printer must be loaded with Onyx and carbon fiber for the X7 or Onyx and fiberglass for the X5.
  3. Temporarily disable the Scan Bed Before Prints option Menu > Settings > System Info > gear icon. This feature will be reenabled at step 7.
  4. Run the Z Offset utility Menu > Bed Level > Adjust Print Bed Z Offset and follow the onscreen instructions.
  5. Run the Shim Bed Level utility Menu > Bed Level > Shim Bed Level and follow the onscreen instructions. 
  6. Run the Adjust Laser Offsets utility Menu > Utilities > Maintenance > Print Head Alignment > Laser-Guided Offsets and follow the onscreen instructions.
  7. Re-enable the Scan Bed Before Prints option Menu > Settings > System Info > gear icon.
  8. Run the Laser Bed Level utility Menu > Bed Level > Laser Bed Level and follow the onscreen instructions. 
  9. Run the Adjust Fiber Nozzle Height utility again Menu > Bed Level > Adjust Fiber Nozzle Height and follow the onscreen instructions.
