Using the Sheet Metal Edge Flange Editor

This article discusses how to change the profile of a sheet metal Edge Flange feature. In many cases, you can add additional features to edge flanges to make cuts, add holes, or add to the profile. However, much of this can be controlled by a single sketch inside the edge flange feature. This reduces the complexity of your model and makes it easier to change.

Example of a sheet metal part

To change the Edge Flange Profile, follow the steps below.

  1. Locate the Edge Flange and select "Edit Feature".

  2. Select "Edit Flange Profile". If you have more than one edge applied, select the desired edge before editing the profile. The profile can be different for each edge.

  3. Make the desired changes to your edge flange. Monitor the "Profile Sketch" window to confirm that the sketch is valid. You can move this window around if it gets in the way of your sketch.

  4. Once finished with the sketch, select "Finish".

  5. To edit the sketch again, you can select the drop-down button next to the Edge Flange feature and edit the corresponding sketch.

    Editing the flange profile directly

If you compare this part to one completed with various cuts and/or hole wizard features, you will notice an increase in performance while using the "Edit Flange Profile" method. I can confirm this by using the "Performance Evaluation" tool located in the "Evaluate" tab.

Of course, this won't matter for simple parts, but it can make a big difference in a larger sheet metal assembly or part.

Both methods are valid ways to complete the design. However, you can save a lot of time, effort, and efficiency when making changes directly to the Edge Flange Profiles.
