SOLIDWORKS License Server Error: SW_D exited with status 255

Problem

This article goes over how to resolve the SolidNetwork License Manager Log Error:
SW_D exited with status 255

This is caused by the SolidNetwork License Manager Server (SNL) not detecting or showing active products or add-ins. It can also happen if the Network Serial Number(s) have missing products or add-ins, which would not provide any licensing to the SNL.

Solution 1: Reactivate the Licenses

  1. Go to Start > SOLIDWORKS 20XX > SOLIDWORKS Tools > SolidNetWork License Manager Server 20XX
  2. Navigate to the "Server Administration" tab and select "Modify

    Modify snl manager server.png
  3. In the window that opens, select the radio button for "Move your product license(s)to a new/upgraded computer"
  4. Follow the prompts to release the license(s). For more detailed steps, please see the guide below:
Moving SOLIDWORKS License Manager To Another Server
  5. Go to the Server Administration Tab
  6. Click the Reactivate option under Modify, click Next, and follow the prompts to complete reactivation.

  7. If there are still no licenses showing under License usage, or all say 0 and the exit code is still 255 go to the next process.

Solution 2: Manually remove licensing

  1. In the Windows Start Menu, type "cmd" without quotations into the Windows search field, and right-click on the Command Prompt application to select "Run as administrator"

Search for CMD in Windows Search and right click on Command Prompt to launch it as Administrator
  2. Change directories to where the 'swactwiz_s.exe' (SolidNetWork License (SNL)) executable resides with the command CD <File location>. Type in the following default location so the command is:
    CD C:\Program Files (x86)\SOLIDWORKS Corp\SolidNetWork License Manager\utils
  3. In that directory, run the following command:
    swactwiz_s.exe /ts:view

    Run the command swactwiz_s.exe /ts:view
  4. Delete the license using this command:
    swactwiz_s.exe /ts:delete /fulfillmentid:SWN-1234567890XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Delete the license using a command
  5. Launch the SolidNetwork License Manager and try to reactivate. Be sure to confirm it is not trying to read a license file, and then activate over the internet
