Unexpected Result Force Between Components In Study

Problem

To find out what forces a component might experience within a model, the "List Result Force" tool can be used.  However, the results might not appear as expected.

Right-click the Results folder and select Result Force

A static study of a cube stacked on top of another cube with a gravity load is used as an example in the screenshots below.

If the "Reaction Force" is used between two components, the result will show zero reaction force. This is expected because forces in a model must balance to maintain static equilibrium; otherwise, the body would move. The "Reaction Force" only shows results when selecting faces or edges constrained by fixtures. All other faces and edges will display zero force.

Solution

Instead of using the "Reaction Force" option, the "Free Body Force" option can be used to find out the forces acting on a particular location. It is accessed by right-clicking the "Result Folder" and selecting "List Result Force". The free body forces calculated by this tool are dependent on the mesh quality. The higher the mesh quality, the more accurate the results the "Free Body Force" will show.
