How to Create Custom Toolbox Components

Problem

This article goes over how to edit the Toolbox to create custom component sizes by modifying existing components to add more sizes. This is the most basic way to create custom Toolbox components. This is useful when users are requesting a Toolbox component size that is currently not in the Toolbox. For more information on other Toolbox topics, review this article: Comprehensive Toolbox Guide

Solution

Follow the steps below to modify the Toolbox Settings to add new Toolbox component sizes:

  1. In Windows Search, type "Toolbox Settings" to bring up Toolbox Settings 20XX and open it

    Open Toolbox Settings
  2. Once the toolbox is open, select "Customize your hardware" from the Home menu.

select "Customize your hardware" from the Home menu
  3. Choose the hardware standard or folder for adding the custom size to, and right-click on it to select "Copy"

  4. Create a folder to paste it into, or right-click "Toolbox Standards" at the top to paste it into a new folder. We can make the changes below to existing default standards, but it is best practice to keep the custom sizing separate to control the naming structure and make them easy to find/maintain.
  5. Expand the new custom folder to the desired toolbox component to modify
  6. Choose “Size” in the list of Standard Properties and click the “+” at the top of the list.

Chose size and click the plus button
  7. Input the custom parameters for the new size(s) and click "OK" when done. We can also input custom parameters for the other “Standard Properties” in the same way.

  8. Once all changes have been made, click the "Save" icon at the top left to save the Toolbox

Another approach would be to add existing SOLIDWORKS Part files into the Toolbox, as described in this article:
