How to Break External References in SOLIDWORKS

Problem

This article goes over how to Break External References for a Part in SOLIDWORKS. For more information on External References, review this article: Understanding SOLIDWORKS External Reference Definitions

Solution

Follow the steps below to Break External References for a Part:

  1. Open SOLIDWORKS and open the desired Part file
  2. Right-click on the feature or file name with an external reference symbol -> and select "External References" to bring up the External References window.

    Open External References
  3. In the External References window, references can be broken by selecting them and clicking the "Break" button.

Once external references are broken, the external references cannot be restored, which means the references are permanently broken. Breaking external references on a component prevents the existing references from updating, but new references can be added to the component. If an external reference is broken, the feature name or part name will be followed by an arrow with an "X" symbol ->x in the feature manager tree. An example of an external reference icon can be seen below.
