Problem
This article goes over how to add existing SOLIDWORKS Parts into the Toolbox. For more information on other Toolbox topics, review this article: Comprehensive Toolbox Guide
Before adding a Part file into the Toolbox, review the following to prepare the part file:
- The file must be a SOLIDWORKS Part file (.SLDPRT)
- All desired dimensions, features, custom properties, and configurations must be already created/managed within the part file, as the Toolbox cannot edit them
Solution
Follow the steps below to add an existing SOLIDWORKS Part into the Toolbox by modifying Toolbox Settings:
-
In Windows Search, type "Toolbox Settings" to bring up Toolbox Settings 20XX and open it
-
Once the toolbox is open, select "Customize your hardware" from the Home menu.
- We recommend creating a new standard or copying an existing one so as not to modify the defaults. Create a new standard by right-clicking "Toolbox Standards" at the top to select "New Folder". Copy a standard by right-clicking an existing standard to select "Copy", and then right-click it again to select "Paste"
- Expand the Toolbox standard and add a new folder where desired that will contain the added parts by right-clicking an existing standard or folder to select "New Folder"
-
Right-click this new folder to select "Add File" and browse to the part(s) to add
- Once all changes have been made, click the "Save" icon at the top left to save the Toolbox
The newly added parts can be added into assemblies like any other Toolbox part.
