How to Enable Two Factor Authentication for 3DExperience

Problem

The 3DExperience Platform allows administrators to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for their users. Enabling this will require users to log in to an application on their phone to generate a code. This code will need to be entered after the username and password, and it provides another layer of security.

This will require an authenticator app to be installed on a phone to use 2FA. The application must be compatible with TOTP methodology (Time-based One-Time Password). Some examples are Google Authenticator, KeePassXC, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy, etc.

Before going through with this process, please check with your IT. They may have specific authenticator apps that they would prefer for you to use or additional security concerns.

Solution

  1. Access the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform and go to "My Profile"

    Accessing My Profile
  2. Select "Preferences" on the top right of the window and click "Manage" next to "2 Factor Authentication"

Locating the settings to manage 2 Factor Authentication
  3. Select "Activate" to enable 2-Factor Authentication

  4. Answer the security questions. Please answer these to the best of your ability, and keep in mind that they will be used to recover your account if 2FA has any problems.
  5. Next, you will need to use your authenticator app on your phone to complete the process. Scan the QR code and follow the on-screen instructions to activate it. The exact process is different depending on your authenticator app.

  6. Once completed, enter the code displayed by your application into the field at the bottom of the page.
  7. Select "Back" on the following page to go back to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. Do not select "Deactivate" or "Transfer".
  8. Close the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform
  9. Access the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform in a new tab
  10. Enter your email and password

  11. Enter the 2FA Code that is provided by your authentication app. The process of obtaining this can vary between different applications, so check with your IT if you are unfamiliar with the process.
  12. Optional: Selecting "Trust this Computer" will prevent 3DEXPERIENCE Platform from asking for your 2FA code in the future.

    Prompt for 2FA Code
  13. Select "Validate", and the login procedure is finished
