Hole Wizard Error, "SOLIDWORKS Needs a Folder to Store User Data"

Problem

When using the SOLIDWORKS Hole Wizard tool, users encounter the following error:

SolidWorks Error, SOLIDWORKS needs a folder to store user data for Hole Wizard. Since the default "data" folder does not have read-write privileges, please select a folder that does.

This error is caused when the User does not have the necessary security permissions to write data to the Hole Wizard Favorite's folder. SOLIDWORKS requires full permissions to this folder in order to store Hole Wizard data.

Solution

This error is caused by the User's System having insufficient permission to write/read data from the Hole Wizard Favorites Database folder. To fix this solution the folder must be given the appropriate permissions.

  1. Access the File Locations tab of the System Options by going into Tools -> Options -> File Locations. You can then change the drop-down for the Show Folders For to Hole Wizard Favorites Database.Hole Wizard Favorites File Locations Tabe in SolidWorks System Options
  2. Take note of this Folder location. The folder specified in this location is the one that must have its read/write access permissions modified. At times no folder will be specified so you can create a new folder in a desired location and add it then.

  3. Navigate to the folder with Windows Explorer that is listed in the system options, right click it, then choose properties. From here you can go into the Security tab to change the permissions. If System (and all other users) have Deny toggled on you will have to edit the permissions to allow full control.

  4. Once the folder has proper read/write access for the user Hole Wizard information can be stored into it again and the error will not appear next time you use the tool.
