SOLIDWORKS Error “Failed to update the system registry: Please try using REGEDIT”

Problem

This article goes over the SOLIDWORKS Error: "Failed to update the system registry. Please try using REGEDIT". This error typically occurs when launching SOLIDWORKS.

Error message, SolidWorks, stating: Failed to update the system registry. Please try using REGEDIT.

Solution

This error message requires the user to modify the registry editor. 

When going into the Registry Editor, do not modify or delete anything except what is listed below. If you do not feel comfortable performing the steps listed below, please contact Technical Support.

  1. Close all applications, including SOLIDWORKS

  2. Open Windows Search, search for REGEDIT, and then hit Enter to open the Registry Editor

    Windows start menu search for the Registry Editor, Regedit
  3. Browse to the folder named: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\

  4. Right-click the file HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SldAssem.Document and select "Permissions"

    Select Permissions
  5. Select the currently logged-in user from the top section of the dialog box

  6. In the Permissions dialog box, enable Full Control and Read in the Allow column, then click "OK"

  7. Repeat steps 4-6 for the registry keys HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SldDraw.Document and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SldPart.Document
  8. Restart the machine
  9. Launch SOLIDWORKS to retest the issue
