How to Use the Import Files Task in Task Scheduler

This is an article showing how to use the Import Files Function in the Task Scheduler. You can find a full list of tasks performed by the Task Scheduler here: Automating Tasks After Hours – Hawk Ridge Systems Support

Problem:

Manually importing large numbers of neutral CAD files into SOLIDWORKS® can be time-consuming, especially when working with bulk data or when imports need to be run after hours. Users may want a way to automatically import supported file types into SOLIDWORKS part files without having to manually perform each import.

Solution:

The Import Files task in the SOLIDWORKS Task Scheduler allows users to schedule the automatic import of supported neutral CAD files into SOLIDWORKS part files (.sldprt), either individually or in bulk folders.

Supported file types include Parasolid, STEP, ACIS, IGES, VDAFS, Rhino, and SLDXML

  1. Open the Start Menu, type SOLIDWORKS Task Scheduler, and launch the application.
  2. Select Import Files from the list of available tasks.SolidWorks Task scheduler program with the Import File Task boxed with a red rectangle
  3. Enter a custom Task Title if desired.
  4. Click Add File to import individual files or click Add Folder to import all supported files from a selected directory depending on your needs. This will open the File Explorer, browse to the desired files or folders and confirm your selection.
  5. Set the Running mode to Once, Daily, Weekly, or Monthly.
  6. Specify the Start Time and Start Date.
  7. Select the Task Output Folder and choose whether the imported files should be saved in their original location or a specified folder after the task is complete.
  8. Click Options to configure import settings.SOLIDWORKS Task Scheduler Import Files window displaying numbered callouts that correspond to configuration steps in the instructions.

  11. Specify the Task working folder. Task working files can include backup files, reports, and so on.
  12. Set a Timeout duration for the task. SOLIDWORKS Task Scheduler ends the task after the task runs for this amount of time, whether or not the task completes.
  13. Choose whether SOLIDWORKS should run minimized or in the background during the task.
  14. Click Finish to schedule the Import Files task.

Once scheduled, SOLIDWORKS will automatically launch at the specified time, import the selected files according to the defined settings, save the results to the Task Output Folder, and close when the task is complete.
