How to change the SOLIDWORKS BOM Part Number

Problem

By default, the SOLIDWORKS Bill of Materials (BOM) will show the "Document Name" under the category called “Part Number”. This article goes over how to change the Part Number for a part. 

Solution

  1. Open SOLIDWORKS and open the desired Part file to change
  2. Change to the Configuration Manager tab and right-click on the desired configuration to change

  3. Select "Properties"

    Right click the configuration and select Properties

  4. In Properties, change the Bill of Materials Options dropdown to "Document Name", "Configuration Name", or "User Specified Name" to control what is displayed in the BOM

  5. Click the green checkmark to accept the change
  6. Save the part file
  7. Open the Drawing to rebuild it and see the name change in the BOM
  8. Save the Drawing

Note: To set the Default Setting for a Part File, start a new Part from the existing template, follow the steps above to change the setting, and save over the existing template file (.prtdot) from File > Save As.
