Another installation is already in progress error when installing SOLIDWORKS prerequisites

Problem

This article walks through the steps necessary to resolve the error message "Another installation is already in progress", which can occur during the installation of any of the SOLIDWORKS prerequisite programs.

 

Installation Error -1618: another installation is already in progress

 

The image above shows an example of the error message, which can occur while installing a program. The actual error code will be generated by the program that is attempting to install, so the message itself will be the unique identifier.

Solution 1: Restart the machine

When you first encounter this error, try restarting the machine, and then try the installation again. If that does not help, try Solution 2 below.

Solution 2: Restart the Windows Installer Service

If restarting the machine did not help, use the steps listed below to clear installation data and try the installation again.

Steps to clear the installation data:

  1. In a Windows Search, type "Services" to bring up Services and left-click it to open it
     

    Open Services
  2. In the Services Window, find the "Windows Installer" service, as shown below
    Find the Windows Installer Service
  3. Right-click the "Windows Installer" service and select "Properties".
  4. In the Properties Window, stop the service, restart it, and hit OK
     

    Restart the Windows Installer Service
  5. Attempt the installation again
