Problem

Designing with SOLIDWORKS can sometimes be a long and tedious process. To help, this article goes over the common default shortcuts included. These shortcuts range from toolbars to navigation and everything in between and can significantly improve modeling efficiency. 

This is not a complete list of all shortcuts available in SOLIDWORKS. In fact, the entire User Interface can be completely customized to fit specific needs and preferences.  Most of these can be customized in Tools> Customize.

Solution 1: Display

1. Rotate the View: Arrow Keys
2. Rotate about normal to the screen: Alt+Arrow Keys 
3. Rotate the view in 90deg increments: Shift+Arrow Keys
4. Move the View: Ctrl+Arrow Keys
5. Zoom In: Shift + Z Keys
6. Zoom Out: Z Key
7. Zoom to Fit: F Key
8. Magnifying Glass: G key
9. Rotate to a different view: Ctrl+(1-8) Keys (Example: "Ctrl+1" is for Front View)
10. Bring up View Orientation Dialog: Space Bar

Solution 2: Interface

1. New File: CTRL + N Keys
2. Open File: CTRL + O Keys
3. Close File: CTRL + W Keys
4. Save File: CTRL + S Keys
5. Rebuild: CTRL + B Keys
6. Complete Rebuild: CTRL + Q Keys
7. Move between open Documents: CTRL + Tab Keys
8. Bring up Confirmation Corner or Breadcrumbs: D key

Solution 3: Windows Commands

1. Undo: CTRL + Z Keys
2. Redo: CTRL + Y Keys
3. Select All: CTRL + A Keys
4. Cut: CTRL + X Keys
5. Copy: CTRL + C Keys
6. Paste: CTRL + V Keys
7. Repeat Last Command: Enter

Solution 4: Selection Filter Toolbar

1. Bring up Selection Filter Toolbar: F5 Key
2. Filter Selection by Vertices: V Key
3. Filter Selection by Edges: E Key
4. Filter Selection by Faces: X Key
5. Turn off all active filters: F6 Key

Solution 5: Mouse Gesture Wheel

Hold down right-click and move the Mouse to bring up the Gesture Wheel. This will select the option located in that direction moved. The Mouse Gesture Wheel can be customized from Tools> Customize. The number of gestures can be set to 2, 3, 4, 8, or 12. Below is an example of the Mouse Gesture Wheel.

Solution 6: Shortcut Bar

To bring up the Shortcut Bar, press the S key. This will bring up a shortcut toolbar near your mouse. This will vary by SOLIDWORKS file type and when in a Sketch. The shortcut bar can be customized from Tools> Customize.
