How to use the Select Other Command in SOLIDWORKS

Problem

Sometimes making selections in SOLIDWORKS can be difficult. The "Select Other" command is a helpful tool to quickly see all items in an Assembly or Part that are under your mouse, allowing you to pick items from a list such as edges, faces, and vertices. This article goes over how to access it and its basic use.

Solution

  1. Right-click on the model in the general region where a selection is needed

  2. In the right-click menu, click on "Select Other", which is an icon comprised of a mouse pointer with planes

  3. We now see a list of different selections that can be made, and hovering over them shows a preview in the graphics area

  4. Left-click the selection in the list that is desired, or left-click it in the graphics area to select

This tool is particularly useful when needing to make selections that are such as the inside faces of parts or hidden geometry. When using Select Other, right-clicking a selection will hide that entity to make it easier to look through the rest of the geometry.
