How to Extrude along a Sketch or Edge in SOLIDWORKS

Problem

In SOLIDWORKS, we can extrude a sketch along any linear path, such as a linear edge or sketch segment; it does not have to be normal to the sketch plane. This article goes over the steps to accomplish this.

Solution

To utilize this option, follow the steps below:

  1. Either create a new sketch defining the vector direction or locate an existing linear edge on the model for the desired direction.
  2. Create a new sketch to Extrude
  3. Start the Boss Extrude or Cut Extrude feature
  4. In the Property Manager, click the "Direction of Extrusion" Blue Selection Box

  5. Pick the Sketch Segment or Linear Edge to specify the direction. The example below is of a Linear Edge.

  6. Finish setting the feature parameters and click the Green Checkmark to create the feature
