Recreating Default SolidWorks Templates

Problem

This article reviews how to recreate the default SOLIDWORKS part, assembly, and drawing templates in cases where they are missing or no longer available. 

Solution

To have SolidWorks regenerate the default templates:

  1. Browse to Tools > Options > File Locations and make sure the drop-down bar says Document Templates.SOLIDWORKS File Locations Document Templates
  2. Navigate to these locations within Windows Explorer and rename the folder containing the template files (.prtdot, .asmdot, .drwdot).
  3. After restarting SOLIDWORKS, click File > New and the new templates will be generated.
