Problem
This article goes over how to modify the geometry of a standard Toolbox part by copying a standard to modify in SOLIDWORKS. For more information on other Toolbox topics, review this article: Comprehensive Toolbox Guide
Solution
Follow the steps below to modify the geometry of Toolbox part copies in SOLIDWORKS:
- In Windows Search, type "Toolbox Settings" to bring up Toolbox Settings 20XX and open it
- Once the toolbox is open, select "Customize your hardware" from the Home menu.
- Choose the hardware standard or folder for adding the custom size to, and right-click on it to select "Copy"
- Create a folder to paste it into, or right-click "Toolbox Standards" at the top to paste it into a new folder. We can make the changes below to existing default standards, but it is best practice to keep the custom sizing separate to control the naming structure and make them easy to find/maintain.
- Click the "Save" icon at the top left to save the Toolbox and close it
- Locate the Part file to modify by expanding the Toolbox folder, typically found in C:\SOLIDWORKS Data
- Right-click on the part to select "Properties" and, in Properties, uncheck "Read-only", then click "Apply" and "OK". This change is to allow the file to be modified and saved.
- Open the file in SOLIDWORKS and modify the geometry as desired
- Use File > Save As to save over the existing file with the changes
- Go back to Properties for that file to set it to Read-only again
