"Error 1706. No valid source could be found..." Upon Launching Previous Version After Upgrading SOLIDWORKS

This article documents an issue with SOLIDWORKS service pack upgrades on machines with previous year versions installed.

Upon making a service pack (SP) upgrade of SOLIDWORKS, previous installations of SOLIDWORKS will sometimes display the below error:

error 1706 no valid source could be found.png

This does not appear to occur for new installations of SOLIDWORKS; it has only been reported after upgrades from a previous SP.

Solution

This issue is currently still under investigation, however for many customers, it can be resolved by repairing the previous version of SOLIDWORKS that is exhibiting the behavior.

Steps to repair Solidworks 2023 can be found here. The steps for previous versions can be found by searching our knowledge base but should be the same across year versions.

The repair needs to be done using the full installation file set of that previous version. If the full file set is not available or present on the machine, contact your reseller.
