Drawing Dimensions do not display any dimension symbols due to Symbol Library File (GTOL.SYM) being missing

Problem

This article goes over the issue where SOLIDWORKS Drawing Dimensions display <MOD-DIAM> instead of a Diameter symbol, or there is the error "Symbol library file (GTOL.SYM) is missing". This means SOLIDWORKS is not pointed at the correct Symbol Library file, or it is corrupted.

Solution

  1. Open SOLIDWORKS

  2. Navigate to Tools > Options > System Options > File Locations > Symbol Library File

    Check Symbol Library Location
  3. If the entry under the “Symbol Library File” File Location is empty, open Windows Explorer to check for the GTOL.SYM file 
  4. Navigate to the default location of: C:\ProgramData\Solidworks\Solidworks 20XX\lang\english

  5. If the GTOL.SYM file does exist, continue to step 7

  6. If the GTOL.SYM file does not exist, repair SOLIDWORKS following the steps here:

  7. Once the GTOL.SYM file is verified, ensure that SOLIDWORKS is pointed at it from Tools > Options > System Options > File Locations > Symbol Library File
  8. Use the "Delete" button to delete the current file path
  9. Use the "Add" button to add the correct file path

  10. Click "OK" to accept the changes

  11. Open a SOLIDWORKS Drawing again to retest the issue
