This guide is written for installing a new instance of SQL Server 2008 as it relates to SolidWorks Enterprise PDM.  For a complete set of installation instructions, as well as system and software requirements, please use the following link.

SQL Server is a database program, and is a required component of a SolidWorks Enterprise PDM vault installation.  The SQL Server is used to manage the metadata for the files in the vault.  The information in the SQL database should NEVER be manually modified.  All modifications should come through the Enterprise Administration Tool or through a client interface.

This is not a troubleshooting guide.  If you have any technical issues with SolidWorks, please contact Hawk Ridge Systems technical support.

This document is only to be distributed and used by Hawk Ridge Systems customers.  Any other use is prohibited.

 

Before Installation

Hawk Ridge Systems highly recommends taking a moment before installing SQL to check that you are ready to load your new software.

1. Check hardware and software compatibility.

 2. Check compatibility with the version of Enterprise you are running.

3. For local installations, be sure to run Setup as an administrator.  If you are installing from a network folder, you will need to use a domain account that has read and execute permissions for that folder.

4. If Enterprise PDM is already installed on the system you will need to uninstall the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility package before you install SQL Server 2008.

5. Microsoft .Net 3.5 SP1 and Windows Installer 4.5 are required for installing SQL Server 2008.  If they are not installed, the Installation Wizard will install them before launching the SQL Server 2008 installation. You may need to restart the system after these installations.

6. For Windows Server 2008 R2, confirm that Microsoft .Net 3.5 SP1 is already installed.  To do this:

• Right click Computer and select Manage. Under Features, click Add Features to open the Add Features wizard 
• In the Add Features Wizard, on the Features page, expand .Net Framework 3.5.1 Features and select .Net Framework 3.5.1 (Installed).

7. All installations should be done from the files supplied by SolidWorks.

8.Port 1433 will need to be opened, for TCP and UDP traffic, on any firewalls between the SQL server system and the Enterprise Archive server and clients

 

Installation

1. Close all Windows applications, including Windows Explorer 

2. Launch the installation wizard by inserting the SQL Server 2008 media, or browsing to the install files, and launching Setup.exe.  Use the default settings in this wizard unless otherwise specified.

3. In the SQL Server Installation Center window, click on Installation in the left pane.  Then click New installation or add features to an existing installation. This should bring up the SQL Server 2008 Setup window.

4. In the Setup Support Rules screen, the installer checks for problems that might prevent the installation of the SQL Server support files.

• If no problems are found, click OK.
• If there are problems;

-Click Show details to list the failed components.

- Make note of the failed components, then click Cancel to stop the installation and fix the problems.

5. On the Product Key screen, if you are installing form the media supplied from Solidworks the product key should already be entered.  Click Next on this screen.

6. Read and accept the license agreement.  Click Next.

7. On the Setup Support Files screen click Install.

8. The installer runs another check for Setup Support Rules. 

• If no problems are found, click OK.
• If there are problems;

-Click Show details to list the failed components.

- Make note of the failed components, then click Cancel to stop the installation and fix the problems.

9. On the Setup Role screen select SQL Server Feature Installation and click Next.

10. Under Feature Selection, select the following features

• Instance Features

-  Database Engine Services

• Shared Features

-  Client Tools Connectivity

-  Integration Services

-  Client Tools Backward Compatibility

-  SQL Server Books Online

-  Management Tools – Basic

-  Management Tools – Complete

11. Instance Configuration screen

• If this is a new installation

-  Select Default Instance and click Next

• If SQL is already installed on the system and you didn’t upgrade

-  Select Named Instance

-  Enter a unique instance name for this installation

-  Click Next.

12. Disk Space Requirements: if the disk space requirements are met, click Next.

• If disk space requirements are not met, not the required space, click Cancel and either free up some space or add additional hard drives

13. On the Server Configuration screen set the options as follows

• SQL Server Agent

-  Account name: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

-  Startup Type: Automatic

• SQL Server Database Engine

-  Account name: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

-  Startup Type: Automatic

• SQL Server Integration Services 10.0

-  Account name: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

-  Startup Type: Automatic

• SQL Server Browser

-  Account name: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

-  Startup Type: Automatic 

 

14. For the Server Configuration/Collation tab

• Click Customize for the Database Engine
• In the dialog box, select Windows Collation designator and sort order and the Collation designator that matches your locale.  Keep the other selections.
• Click Next

15. Database Engine Configuration/Account Provisioning tab

• Select Mixed Mode (SQL Server Authentication and Windows Authentication). Enterprise uses SQL Server authentication for database communication
• Type a strong password for the system administrator (SA) account.  Do not leave the password blank.  For password rules, click Help.
• Retype the password to confirm it.
• Under Specify SQL Server Administrators, click Add.
• In the Select Users, Computers, or Groups dialog box, enter the name of the local administrators of the system or the Administrators group.
• Click Next

16. ***Optional***

• On the Database Engine Configuration/Data Directories tab, you have the option of changing the default folder where the databases created by Enterprise PDM are stored.  To do this, change the location for User database directory and User database log directory.

17. Do not change the settings on the Filestream tab.

18. On the Error and Usage Reporting screen click Next.

19. The installer runs another check for Setup Support Rules.

• If no problems are found, click OK.
• If there are problems

- Click Show details to list the failed components.

- Make note of the failed components, then click Cancel to stop the installation and fix the problems.

20. On the Ready to Install screen, click Next.

• When the progress bar shows Setup Process Complete, click Next.

21. On the Complete screen, click Close.
