How to Perform Ping and Telnet Tests

Problem

This article shows how to perform the basic Ping and Telnet communication tests between a client and server. In both tests, we will be working with the Windows Command Prompt. To get to the Command Prompt, click the Windows Start Menu and type cmd in the Search bar.

Open Command Prompt

Ping Test

To verify if there is a connection between the two computers, we can run a Ping test. This test can be done on either the server computer or the client's computer.

  1. Browse to All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
  2. Type “ping <ServerName>” or “Ping <server IP address>” if you are on the client's computer. If you are on the server computer, type “ping <ClientName>” or “Ping <Client computer IP address>”, then hit Enter. If we want to run a continuous ping, add -t to the end of the statement. Then, use Ctrl + C to end the continuous ping.
  3. If the communication was successful, there will be a message about packets sent and received

  1. If the communication fails, there will be a message about the ping not being able to find the host

  1. If the test fails, verify that the server computer and client computer are connected to the same network

Telnet Test

Now that we have communication through the ping test, we can test connection over specific firewall ports. This is done with a Telnet test.

  1. Type "Turn Windows features" into the Windows Search Bar to open "Turn Windows features on or off"
Open "turn windows features on or off"
  1. Check the box for Telnet Client in the Windows Features list and click "OK" to enable Telnet
Check Telnet
  1. Browse to All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
  2. Type “telnet <ServerName> 25734” or “telnet <Server IP address> 25734”.

  3. Press Enter.

If the command prompt returns any errors, then this can also indicate that the firewall ports are blocking the user's communication to the server.
