How to Link SOLIDWORKS Drawing Notes to a Subassembly’s Custom Properties

Problem

This article goes over how to link a note in a SOLIDWORKS Drawing to the Subassembly in the Top-Level Assembly Drawing View. This is useful when needing to show the properties of the Subassembly instead of the Top-level.

Solution

  1. Open SOLIDWORKS and open or start a Drawing with a Drawing View of the Top-level Assembly
  2. Create a note and attach it to the Drawing View

    Create Note
  3. In the Property Window, click "Link to Property"

    Click Link to Property
  4. In the Property Window, change to "Model found here" with the dropdown set to "Select component or other drawing view"

Set to Model found here with selected component or other drawing view
  5. In the Property Manager panel to the left, drag down the dot so we can see the Drawing Feature tree while these note windows are open

    Drag the dot down
  6. With the added window dragged down, expand the feature tree for the drawing view so the subassembly is shown in the tree and select it by left-clicking

Expand the feature tree and select the subassembly
  7. Use the "Property Name" dropdown to select a property and click "OK" to finish linking the Note
