Derived Part Prompt When Inserting a Forming Tool in SOLIDWORKS

Problem

This article describes how to resolve the prompt saying “Are you trying to make a derived part?” when placing a forming tool into a sheet metal part. This happens if the Forming Tool does not have the Forming Tool Folder Flag and causes the part to not be cut.

Solution

  1. Open SOLIDWORKS and Navigate the Design Library
  2. Expand the Design Library Folders to navigate to the folder with the problematic Forming Tool
  3. Right-click on the folder containing the forming tool and select "Forming Tools Folder"

Right click on the folder and select Forming Tools Folder
  4. Try to insert the forming tool into the part again
