Derived Part Prompt When Inserting a Forming Tool in SOLIDWORKS

This article describes how to resolve the prompt saying “Are you trying to make a derived part?” when placing a forming tool into a sheet metal part.

Problem

When inserting a Forming Tool into a sheet metal part a dialog box appears asking if you would like to make a derived part. Subsequently the sheet metal part is not cut.

Background Information

This issue arises when SolidWorks treats forming tools as nested parts because the forming tools flag has been removed.

Method for Repair

  1. Open up SolidWorks and pick on the Task Pane, Expand the Design Library Folder.
  2. Right-click on the Forming Tools directory and choose "Forming Tools Folder". This will set all parts in this folder to act as sheet metal forming tools.
