How to Fully Define a Sketch

Problem

This article goes over how to use the Fully Define Sketch feature to fully define a Sketch in SOLIDWORKS. This can be useful when having trouble figuring out what dimensions and relations to add to fully define a sketch. It is best practice to fully define a sketch so that it does not move around accidentally when editing.

Solution

  1. Open SOLIDWORKS and open the file with the problematic Sketch

  2. Edit the Sketch
  3. Go to Tools > Dimensions > Fully Define Sketch

Go to Tools > Dimensions > Fully Define Sketch
  4. Choose what entities to define, or select the "All entities" option and choose to add Relations and/or Dimensions

Select options for Fully Define Sketch
  5. Click "Calculate" to have the tool calculate how to define the sketch fully, and click the Green Checkmark to accept the changes.
