How to change the SOLIDWORKS File Thumbnail Preview Orientation

Problem

This article describes the process of changing a SOLIDWORKS model's orientation in its thumbnail preview. For many users, it is easier to search for SOLIDWORKS documents when a thumbnail image of the document is displayed in Windows Explorer. By default, an isometric, zoom-to-fit view is used for the thumbnail image.

Solution

  1. First, the option for "Show Thumbnail Graphics in Windows Explorer" must be checked on in Tools > Options > System Options > General and then hit "OK"
Check on Show Thumbnail Graphics in Windows Explorer.png
  2. Restart SOLIDWORKS to view this change
  3. Open the desired SOLIDWORKS file to change the Thumbnail Orientation in
  4. Go to Tools > Options > Document Properties > Image Quality
  5. Uncheck "Use isometric, zoom to fit view for document preview" and hit "OK"
  6. Position the model to the view desired for the thumbnail and save the file.

The new image will show the current view in the graphics area when the file was saved. Windows Explorer may need to be reopened/refreshed for the thumbnail image to update. Below is an example of the default option disabled to change the thumbnail orientation.
