How to Prevent PDM Transition of Reference Files

Problem

This article describes how to prevent automatic selection of reference files when changing the state of a file in SOLIDWORKS PDM. When a user proceeds to change the state of a file, by default the dialog also checks all the files that are being referenced in order to move them all together through the transition. The option this article goes over is helpful when you only want to change the state of the selected files without changing the state of the referenced files. In the image below, only the Part was selected for 'Change state', but by default the dialog also checked the two Drawing files.

Example of reference files changing state

Solution

  1. Open the PDM Administration Tool (Windows Start Menu > SOLIDWORKS PDM > Administration)
  2. Right-click on the Username for which you need to make the change and click on "Settings"
Right-click the username and select Settings
  1. Click on Reference Dialog, then check "Do not mark reference files when changing state", and click "OK"
Turn on Do not mark reference files when changing state
