How to Install Collaborative Designer for 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS (UES) – R2021x

This article walks through the steps needed to install the Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS (UES) - R2021x.

  • Check the eligibility of your system and environment prior to installation: Cloud Eligibility Tool
  • The Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS role must be granted by a platform administrator and active.
  • SOLIDWORKS must be installed and licensed BEFORE installing the Client software.
  • The supported versions of SOLIDWORKS will depend on the version of the 3DEXPERIENCE Server you will connect to (current version plus 2 versions back).
  • Java is needed for the 3DEXPERIENCE Launcher and must be installed. NOTE: this will take place during the 3DEXPERIENCE installation but can also be performed separately in preparation for the install.
  • The minimum level of Java required for 3DEXPERIENCE PLM Services is the 64-bit version of Update 131 (or higher).
  • The free version of Java can be downloaded from: Latest release | AdoptOpenJDK - Open source, prebuilt OpenJDK binaries

Once the prerequisites are installed, follow the steps below to install the R2021x 3DEXPERIENCE PLM Services client:

  1. Install the software.
  2. Login and test.
  3. Appendix: If needed, clean up from a previous 3DEXPERIENCE PLM Services client installation.

Each step is outlined in the sections below.

Install the software

  1. Login to the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform.
    • You will receive an email invitation from the platform administrator.
    • Click the link in the email to login to the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform.
    • If you do not yet have a 3DEXPERIENCE ID, you can create one at this time. Make sure you register your account with your work email address.
    • Link:
  2. Select the Compass button to access My Roles, then single click on Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS, and finally SOLIDWORKS to launch the software installation.

  3. Download the 3DEXPERIENCE Launcher and then run the executable.

    • NOTE: DO NOT click the “Continue” button yet.  The executable file is downloading and must be opened first before continuing the installation.
    • Once the download is complete, open the “3DEXPERIENCELauncher.msi” file and follow the 3DEXPERIENCE Launcher installation steps. Use the default settings.
  4. After the 3DEXPERIENCE Launcher is installed select Continue:

  5. Install the xCAD Connector and SOLIDWORKS roles.

NOTE: Selecting Install All Roles Containing SOLIDWORKS results in a smaller download and faster installation as it installs only what is required. Selecting Install All Granted Roles could result in a much larger download and longer installation time depending on the number of roles granted.

  6. Follow the installation steps and set the installation location.

NOTE:  If you do not see the installation dialog, it is possible it is behind your browser. You should see the Compass icon in your Taskbar and can click it to bring it forward.

NOTE:  if this warning appears during installation, it is an indication that you need to install Java (as noted in the pre-requisites section above).  Select the SECOND link in the warning text to install the free version of Java.

        1. When you click the SECOND link in the warning, it will open an additional browser tab where you can select the version of Java and download the installation file.
        2. Once downloaded, open the executable file and complete the Java installation. NOTE:  the Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS installation is still running on the other browser tab.  It is merely paused until the Java installation is completed.

  7. Switch back to the previous browser tab (your Dashboard) and continue the installation.  Set the location for the View path (aka: My Work(xxx) or “local cache”).

NOTE:  pay close attention to this as it is the location to where all files accessed from the platform will be downloaded on your local workstation.

  8. Select language.
  9. Click Install and follow the remaining installation steps.
Note: an information dialog may appear suggesting a restart. The restart can be deferred until all installation steps are completed.
  10. The client software installation is complete, and the computer may be restarted.

Login and Test

  1. Login to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform:
  2. Again, select the Compass button to access My Roles, then single click on Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS, and finally SOLIDWORKS. Now that the software is installed, the desktop SOLIDWORKS application will start and connect to the platform.
  3. The SOLIDWORKS desktop application is now launched with the 3DEXPERIENCE Add-in loaded and connected to the platform.

NOTE:  during the initial launch of SOLIDWORKS you will be presented with a Windows Defender Firewall message to allow the connection over different types of networks.  Choose accordingly.  You will only see this message after the initial installation.

  4. Once SOLIDWORKS launches, you can check the 3DEXPERIENCE Add-in is connected by clicking the Compass tab on the Task Pane. You will see your tenant name/number under My Session.
  5. Use windows explorer to verify that the C:\3DEXPERINCE\My Work(userid) directory exists.
  6. The installation is now complete.

Appendix: Clean Up a Previous Installation (if needed)

  1. Uninstall the following (if they exist) using Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program:
