Losing Description in Custom Property

This article is a step by step guide to fix disappearing descriptions in the custom property.

You just added a description in your custom properties. You save the file and realize the description property has been deleted. This may be happening because a particular DLL was not registered. Please follow the steps below to resolve this issue:

  1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the SolidWorks installation directory. This is located by default at C:\Program Files\SolidWorks Corp\SolidWorks. Locate "sldpropertyhandler.dll". Keep this window open for later use.
  2. Run the Command Prompt as an Administrator by typing 'cmd' in the Windows search field, right clicking 'cmd.exe', and selecting "Run as administrator".
  3. In the command prompt type 'regsvr32', with a space at the end.
  4. Drag and drop the sldpropertyhandler.dll file from Windows explorer into the command prompt and hit enter to register the dll.  If it does not drop in, manually type in the file path with quotations around the file path. The end result should look similar to the image below.
