Save as PDF causes some note entities to disappear

This article addresses a specific issue known to SOLIDWORKS related to text disappearing when saving as a PDF. There may be other causes of this issue as well, but this is a place to start.

Symptoms:

When performing a File > Save As > PDF, text is removed from the drawing. This typically happens on older drawings on newer versions of Windows OS, specifically, notes with "Arial Unicode MS" as the font. The issue appears to be machine specific, as other users are capable of saving the file with the text. Using the Print to PDF does show the fonts, though this may not be ideal as the text is not searchable.

Cause:

The ‘Arial Unicode MS’ is no longer available in the Microsoft® Office® 2016 software. Older drawing that may have used this font will not give you the font missing error message, but when saved, it cannot recognize the font so it disappears. If you are experiencing this with other fonts, check your system to see if the font of the missing text is installed.

Solution:

The simplest solution is to either install the "Arial Unicode MS" or missing font onto your machine. You can grab it from a machine that has the font or revert to Office 2013. You can also change the font of the note to something that exists on your system.
